Tune to a good mood infront of your own audience
Dagobert Kohlmeyer (K.J.)
The European Women’s Chess Championship will be started on 20th March in Dresden, that means again there will be a single-championship for chess in Germany. We interviewed the national team manager Uwe Bönsch about this:
Who is going to play for DSB (German Chess Faderation)?
It is not really certain yet who is going to take part. The deadline for registration was only at 20th February. That means we have to wait fort he results about the list of players. Some of our female players have to manage a family by the way. So they can have problems to manage everything at once, child care for a long period for example. So I can’t exclude that some female players – because of objective reasons – can’t manage to participate. It is likely to happen with Ketino Kachiani.
But Elisabeth Pähtz will take part, won’t she?
Of course. She is beeing supported by the DSB since many years. In Dresden the conditions are very good, too. She trains every day and she is prepared by her personal Coach. Her Trainer will accompany her through the tournament, too. Well, I think she has good conditions and will be able to do her best. Even though Elisabeth is from Erfurt she is playing „at home“ in Dresden. Could you think of a ‚home advantage’ in chess? I would not call it a direct home advantage. It depends on the tenor to the championship. That is the main thing. Of course, a homelike surrounding can have a positive effect on you. You could fell comfortable at home and say: “Well, okay, in front of my own audience I’m in a good mood and therefore I can play successfully.” But a real home advantage is not detectable.
Natalja Shukowa, Almira Skriptschenko, Antoaneta Stefanowa, Pia Cramling – in every European Championship there was a new femal winner. How would you gauge the strength of the femal players of the DSB? I hope Elisabeth Pähtz is going to have a say in it, too. There are some players who could win, but no clear favourite. Maybe Elisabeth has not come to her top yet, but if everything goes off without a hitch I dare say she could make a good position.
They do not only fight for a European medal. They main thing is the qualification for the next World Championship. Ketino Kachiani did it during the last European Championship. In Dresden you have to get a position among the 12 best players, with this you are qualified for the World Championship. This is going to be hard enough because Open-Tournaments have their own rules.
How does the national team manager gauge engagement for chess of the inhabitans of Dresden?
Chess in Dresden took shape very positively during the last years. There are manifold activities, a lot of tournaments. Well, I think the European Women’s Championship fits in. This is going to be another highlight among the variaty of championships. And you have to keep in mind that Dresden is going to apply for the Chess Olympiad in 2008. I think we have a good chance. Then the Europen Women’s Championship can be seen as a step into the direction of the Olympiad.
Garri Kasparow is going to be in Dresden at the end of March. He is going to play Simultan and present his second volume about his „My Great Predecessors”.
I am happy about this. I am sure he will join the Women’s Championship for some time. When No. 1 of the world rankings visits such a big chess event one could of course say that’s something really special.
