The chess clock
Dagobert Kohlmeyer (K.J.)
The company, Euro Schach Dresden, is existing since 1990. Nowadays, they support the Women`s European Championship. The tournament is not only provided with chess figures and board for the tournament, but also a new prototype from electronic clocks.
The good old GARDE clock can nowadays no longer be used for international events, it is out of business. Reason for these are the new timing rules of the World Chess Federation. The rules say that next to the (shortened) thinkingtime every participant gains a specific bonus time for every move.
We are talking with Hans Bodach, busieness runner of Euro Schach Dresden and with the European Championship chief arbiter Klaus Deventer about the advantages of the new clock.
Hans Bodach: The software comes from Germany and the manufactoring takes place in Asia. We have the different modes- from rapid chess to classical chess. Bobby Fischer invented this once.
Yes, it was an excellent idea. The Fischer-Mode is naturally also on our clock, as well as the mode from David Bronstein.
What does that mean exactly?
Fischer-mode means that the bonus time from every single move can be collected. Bronstein-mode means that bonus time will be lost if it isn´t used. That´s where the difference is.
And where can the thinking time for the Women`s European Championship be found?
It is Mode 12 on Schach Timer “Silver”. This is FIDE thinking time, which is used at the Women´s European Championship. Therefore, there are 90 minutes basic thinking time and 30 seconds are given for every move. A match with 60 moves lasts maximum four hours.
Chief arbiter Klaus Deventer (45) from Singen can only praise the clock : My colleagues and I are very satisfied with the clock. It is very easy to handle and absolute reliable. There are no problems with it. It doesn´t only run perfectly but also has an excellent price. With a price from 49 EUR it could be the cheapest electronic chess clock.
