„I love the classic chess“
Dagobert Kohlmeyer (K.J.)
The 40-year-old GM is a living chess legend. Since many years she embodies the absolute Top of the Women´s Chess World and is one of the few holders of the Grand Master title of the men. This glory of chess was given her 1992 by Worldfederation FIDE. Pia Cramling lives in Spain and is married with GM Juan Bellon, who accompanies her in Dresden. "He is my coach and my best support", said the dainty women with the blue eyes. We talked to Pia Cramling at the prelude of the Chess EC in Treff-Hotel Dresden.
Is this the first time that you are in Dresden?
Yes. But I already heard alot of your beautiful town. At the free day I want to visit the Zwinger and the Gemäldegalerie.
Are you going to defend your title?
That will be very difficult. Even though I already won one game. We have to play in a shorter period of time. I am used to longer thinking times, we had two hours for the first 40 moves in the past, now we have to make 36 moves within 90 minutes.
This is such a great difference for you?
Sure, because I am a GM who prefers the clasic chess. That means I always think of the best move. But I need enough thinking time for this. And the quality of the game will be better, too.
So, what is your aim for the EC?
First of all I want to show good chess and feel joy during my moves on the board. If that means a good ranking - all the better.
One word about the competition. Who is your favourite?
There are some strong players who could win the title. For example Bulgarean Antoaneta Stefanowa. If she is in a good condition, she could win of course. She had been European Champion two years ago.
And the Russian Grand Masters?
They will have a great turn into it, too. They always have new talents. For example the Kosinzewa-Sisters. They are teenager but they are top. the tournament is long, 12 rounds, but they have the energy that is neccessary to hang on.
Pia, you played successfully in German Chess League, even with the men. Are you going to play there in the coming season?
Yes, but I will play with the femal team of Turm Emsdetten.
