Alexandra Kosteniuk - European Women´s Champion in Dresden 2004!
04.04.2004
Glamorous Alexandra Kosteniuk finishes tournament
The talks were quite short, but the smiles of the winnes much longer at the closing ceremony in the “treff” hotel this evening. Besindes a once more excellent banket the best players of the tournament should be awarded at the stage, who had taken much effort during the tournament to gain such honours. The first to come was of course the new European Champion Alexandra Kosteniuk, who without her seemingly not inevitable glasses but presented herself and in a really cute-looking outfit. For the fotographers she gave a definetily wonderful smile as well. Zhaoqin Peng didn´t wear any shades about loosing the final against Kosteniuk on her face anymore. After having all the winners of the tournament including the bronce medalist Antoaneta Stefanova from Bulgaria on the stage and having awarded the prices for the rating groups in the categories, some small queries about the money prices weren´t enough to overshadow the atmosphere of this chessplayers evening. Chief Organizers Dr. Dirk Jordan didn´t miss the opportunity to say many thanks to all his helpers in the team, so did Chief arbiter Klaus Deventer. The final stage of the evening was the passing of the “squadron rod”, the ECU flag, to Feodor Skriptchenko. The moldovian is going to organize a similarly successful European Women´s Championship 2005 as did the Dresdeners!

The board was on fire: Two Russian top players Tatiana Kosintseva and Alexandra Kosteniuk
02.04.2004
Hot fights lead to Tiebreak
There was no decision made in the duel of Zhaoqin Peng and Alexandra Kosteniuk. Both won their games and have to compete once more in a 15-minute-game tomorrow to make clear who the Champion will be. The same applies to the four chasers who will return to the stage to fight for rank three. Besides that there are two qualifications for the WC, four players will be fighting for these. Unfortunatelly Elisabeth Pähtz is not going to be among them she lost against Stefanova from Bulgaria. Two Saxsons are happy about their IM-Standards: Evgenija Shmirina from Dresdner SC and Anne Czäczine from Chemnitz, they finished with six points.

Futile attempts at the top
Both top players were in a competitive mood for the 11th round. But nevertheless, this didn't hinder that they were active on the board until nearly the end. Natalia Zhukova tried a lot against Antoaneta Stefanova but could only gain exactally so few full points as Irina Slavin and Christina Adela Poison. Only Tatiana Kosintseva stayed goal orienented against Jovanka Houska and played in the ending round against compatriot Kosteniuk with white to the title. She has to make a good jog with the black pieces, as well as Peng - it is going to be exciting! This is also true for Elisabeth Pähtz, who won fabulous against Elina Danielan. The Women's European Championship Qualifications is near for the Hope of Dresden.

Peng and Kosteniuk form Double-Peak
The russian chess star finally showed the upperhand against Alexandra Sefanova after 78 moves and is on level with the leading position. She had to content herself with the half point against the title carrier from 2000, Natalia Zhukova but could stop her moving further to the top. New to the chaser trio is the Romanian, Christina Adela Foisor, who played for the first time on the stage and shined with a victim-game. Also strong is Elisabeth Pähtz, who used a free pawn against the spanish Calzetta-Ruiz. Will the 19-year-old be able to make it against the secret favorite Elina Danielian? An exciting fight about the 12 championship's qualification can be expected for the last 2 rounds.

She played on victory also against Irina Slavina: Zhaoqin Peng
30.03.2004
Dissatisfied Peng remains on top
The fight of Zhaoqin Peng lasted 47 moves and at least at the end the Dutchwoman was concerned about a victory against a direct chaser. Luck with draw against Irina Slavina: also the second opponent Elina Danielian lost the whole point against Alexandra Kosteniuk. The Russian is together with Antoaneta Stefanova, Natalia Zhukova and Slavina in the chaser quartett. The defence of the title for Pia Cramling is over for good after her second defeat. Finally the best German Elisabeth Pähtz could not be victorious against Sandugach Shaidullina, just draw. This was annoying for her...
