Back in the title fight: Natalia Zhukova after victory with black against Ketevan Arakhamia
Former European Champion back on top
Marco Held (K.J.)
Peng, in leading position, was a little bit upset after her game against Irina Slavina. The 35-year-old had to give draw after 47 moves and could at least keep the distance from one opponent. Elina Danielian, second chaser from Armenia, had to back down against Kosteniuk so that Peng has got half a point headstart and all in all 7,5 points are hers. The next group of chasers consists of chess Star Alexandra Kosteniuk, Irina Slavina and two former European Champions. European Champion of 2000, Natalia Zhukova, could win against Ketevan Arakhamia-Grant, also Antoaneta Stefanova, European Champion of 2002, made one point against Corina Peptan. On the other hand the hopes of Pia Cramling for defending the title continued to shrink. The Swede lost the second time in the tournament process, yesterday against Monika Socko from Poland.
Elizabeth Paehtz supplied a stormy appearance. First she played very fast against the Russian
Sandugach Shaidullina and conquered a farmer but could not use this material advantage in the final game to make her full point. This annoyed her so much that she left the tournament hall at the double, without confirming the result. The observing world class man Levon Aronian kept himself covered about the chances of the 19-year-old. "perhaps it
was won." Elizabeth missed a good chance to shorten the distance to the top players three rounds before the finish.

Chances to win the title: Alexandra Kosteniuk

Mused for draw: Elisabeth Pähtz
Evgenija Shmirina – today happy about her IM standard
Standard hunt in the Treff Hotel

It went well for two other Dresdeners, now they have half a point less than Elizabeth. A further step to the IM standard succeeded to Evgenija Shmirina. The 14-year-old got a further
draw against the Russian Irina Sudakova. The jump over the 50%-border-line was managed by Tina Mietzner, which could be pleased about a victory against the strong Dagne Ciuksyte from Lithuania. "She missed something and surrendered early, this saved my power", told the flat-sharing partner of top player Paehtz. Disappointed was Jessica Nill. The national player from Baden-Oos had adjusted a rook in the final part of the game. "unfortunate, I never stood as good as at the end of the game today", she said after the defeat against the Dutchwoman Tea Bosboom Lanchava
There were also victories for Claudia Meissner, Galina Shmirina and Ulrike Roessler, who have four points each. "now the tournament runs for me", said the pleased young mother Ulrike, who nearly despaired after the defeats at the beginning. On the question, why she would look so bored at the board she said: "All tactics! I deceive the opponent about my intentions." Dresden is a good place for the title standards. Six players can be pleased about their standards after nine rounds. Besides Evgenija Shmirina, Anne Czäczine, another German from Chemnitz .„ If they keep the standard until the 12th round, they will get the title directly.“ said arbiter Werner Stubenvoll.
