Champion of 2000 waggled
Marco Held / Dagobert Kohlmeyer (K.J.)
First round of European Women´s Championship today in Treff-Hotel – empirical not only the beginning for photographic work but also nicht nur der Startschuss für die sehr beschäftigten Fotografen, sondern auch eine ridge walk for the favourites. On the one side the enemies were beatable and on the other side the nervousity played a great role. Only Natalia Zhukova, European Champion of 2000, got in trouble while her and all other games were published live on the Net. After the failed middle game she needed a lot of luck and help from her Belarussian opponent Anna Sharevich to celebrate her first victory. The other favourits had less problems to win her games. The two other European Champions in Dresden won safely. Pia Cramling from Schweden replied after a mistake against Marina Makropoulou (Greece) and Antoaneta Stefanova from Bulgaria won against Irina Zakurdjaeva (Russia).

Surprised by Galina Shmirina
(K.J.)
A lot of people stood around the board of GM Elisabeth Pähtz. The 19-year-old player of Dresdner SC won with white against Netherland´s Bianca Muhren. Her strong free-pawns on the queen`s wing brought the arbitration after some straight moves. At the previous EC Elisabeth had beaten her enemy already, but it had been easier then, she said. This time it took more than 70 moves to get the arbitration.
There Galina Shmirina, from Dresden, surprised at the first round the next day. The 38-year-old player of DSC profited from a mistake of her lithuanian opponent Dagne Ciuksyte in a critical position. A good beginning for the most experienced Dresdener of 108 participants at the fights for the title of the best women in the continent.
The youngest player of the tournament, Elena Winkelmann from Dresden, could make a full point at the beginning. The 12-year-old recieved it without fight because her opponent did not come in time. After one hour the arbiter turned off the clock and made Elena winner.
The other players from Dresden had to give in to the stregth of their opponents. Only Evgenija Shmirina could make a good fight but had to give in to the timetrouble against Lilith Mkrtchian from Aremenia.
