Peng drops the gauntlet
Marco Held / Dagobert Kohlmeyer (K.J.)
In round four the good winnow from the rest. Only one player among 108 participants could keep clean hands after four rounds. Zhaoqin Peng, playing for the Netherlands, is in the lead with 4 points. At last the 35-year-old GM from the Netherlands, coming from China, defeated Elena Sedina (Italy).
Behind Peng eight other players are lurking, all of them with 3,5 points. Among them Dresdener Elisabeth Pähtz, who had to give her first draw yesterday. She had the black pieces in a Sizilean game and took the draw after 17 moves against Lilit Mkrtchian from Armenia. The young women from the `Kaukasus´ resigned any chances to win although she was in the better position. After the repetition of a move they had to give draw. Elisabeth Pähtz was not discontent: „I expected a more risky opening from Lilit. I am pleasent with the draw. There are still a lot of games to play, I have to save my power properly.”

Shmirina is the winner of Dresdener Duel
Because of the results on the first boards Pia Cramling, a favourite for the tournament, could come up again. She won against French Marie Sebag. Also important was the victory of Armenian Elina Danielian against Tea Bosboom-Lanchava, who is unexpected powerful. Today was the first defeat of 14-year-old Anna Muzychuk from Ukraine, who cut a dash during the last rounds. After all her 2,5 points are great. Her opponent Nadezhda Kosintseva could give a shout of triumph and is one of the direct chasers. Some boards behind was the duel of two Dresdener players. The 14-year-old Evgenija Shmirina thought of a good ending and won against her colleague Ulrike Rößler this was the second victory in this tournament. Tina Mietzner could win versus Diana Skibbe, too. Elena Winkelmann has to fight tomorrow because she had to face a defeat today, too. “May be I have to play more actively.”
