Ketevan Arakhamia fought in vain against Zhaoqin Peng
Weird Peng – victory with black helps for the leadership
Marco Held (K.J.)
An outstanding day for the leader Zhaoqin Peng was the end of the first week in Treff-Hotel Dresden. The Chinese, who is playing for the Netherlands, surprisingly chose the french defense with the black pieces and won against the Georgian opponent Ketevan Arakhamia-Grant. So the 35-year-old woman catapulted herself in the absolute favourite position for the fight for the title. Because both chasers Irina Slavina and Elina Danielian from Russia gave a draw very fast.
Six players have a whole point less than Peng. And behind her the chasers had to fight hard for points. European Champion Pia Cramling was very glad about her sucessful endgame against Russian favourite Nadezhda Kosintseva, and also Antoaneta Stefanova found back to the tournament after some weakness when she defeated Polish Marta Zielinska. After all, Corina Peptan from Rumenia could defeat Monika Socko and hold a god position.
Congratulations on 21st birthday! Heather Richards (r.) got a cake from Elisabeth Pähtz
Elisabeth drums up

Obviously Elisabeth Pähtz could relax when she bake a cake. She congratulated her English friend Heather Richards for 21st birthday and gave her a cake as a present. That relaxed her game on the 64 squares and she could defeate her opponent Angela Dragomirescu with a nice mate move. This fourth victory was important for Elisabeth. She seemed to have bettered her all-time low.

The other Dresdener players could obtain similar successes. All except Claudia Meißner could do better than yesterday. Tina Mietzner could defeat Brigitte von Herman and said: "It was high time I won again!", while Galina Shmirina could win against Magdeburger talent Susan Großmann. Also Ulrike Rößler was happy about her second victory. Both young players Evgenija Shmirina and Elena Winkelmann could obtain draw. Evgenija „clinched“ a draw against Jessica Nill. „She played without action and changed pieces very fast. I expected more activeness" the natioanl player from Baden-Oos. Elena Winkelmann could win draw against Turkish Azar Gilzem and explained: „I spoiled too much good chances during this tournament. So I prefered this draw.“
After the bad sixth round the Dresdener players are in a good mood again and can be hopefull for the up coming five rounds.
