Game of the day: Olga Alexandrova versus Elisabeth Pähtz
Schily sees big Pähtz-fight
Marco Held (K.J.)
A special honour guest provided some unrest in round eight of the Women's EC in Treff Hotel, however it seemed to inspire the ladies also to special achievements. While viewed by Federal
Minister of the Interior Otto Schily Elizabeth Paehtz seemed completely unimpressed and set the Ukrainian top-GM Olga Alexandrova on the stage strongly under pressure. Both contractors
fought up to the bright king and underlined with their draw after nearly 100 moves the "large combat day" at the EC. However, after the draw they have already two points less than the leader.
There Zhaoqin Peng looked for a preliminary decision against Antoaneta Stefanova. Surprisingly the European Champion of 2002 did not play on victory, but Peng won a pawn with the white stones in the endgame, unfortunatelly she could not use this advantage. Same happend to the material-advantage of the Rumanian Corina Peptan against the Russian favourite Alexandra Kosteniuk -
the longest game of the day ended likewise with a draw. Two players took up and approached surprisingly the chasing of Peng and have half a point less than the native Chinese. The Russian
Irina Slavina, absolute winner of the last days, taught the European Champion Pia Cramling the first defeat of the tournament. After a rook-victim the two free pawns of Slavina decided the game. Also Elina Danielian could win against Olga Zimina. The secret favourite of Elizabeth Paehtz from Armenia has thereby an outstanding starting position for the last four rounds.

Evgenija is close to the standard

It was also a good day for the Germans. Two players are half a point behiind Pähtz: Jessica Nill and Evgenija Shmirina. While the Ooserin Nill underlined her favorite position against the young Nargiz Mammadova from Aserbeidschan, the 14-year-old Shmirina surprisingly won against Angela Dragomirescu. „It was a difficult game. I won a pawn and stood better, but both of us came into time-trouble. There she lost her nerves and placed the queen.“, said pleased Evgenija about the successful coup, which brings her further to the desired IM standard. The second victory this weekend was also for two further Dresdeners. Tina Mietzner could win from a worse position against compatriot Heike Vogel, and Ulrike Rößler defeated Swiss Corinne Roelli and made her
third poin. Also Claudia Meissner kept the upper hand after some
worse portions yesterday against the Hamburgerin Alice Winnicki. Also Claudia Meissner was succesful after some worse games yesterday against Alice Winnicki from Hamburg. On
the other hand Galina Shmirina and Elena Winkelmann lost against better opponents. With 12 years the youngest participant - Elena - was defeted by „Miss European Championship 2003“, Monika Seps from Switzerland.
