Women, Chess boards, Sensations
Marco Held / Dagobert Kohlmeyer (K.J.)
You really get to see something for your entrance fee at the European Championship in Dresden. Already after the first round an exciting tournament could be announced. Important for the native fans was Elisabeth Pähtz with her third victory . The 19-year-old is still one of the remaining seven top players. Yesterday Elisabeth defeated Russian Irina Sudakova with 38 moves. “We prepared everything with Yannick Pelletier and discovered a gap within Irina`s opening repertoire“, said the happy winner of that game. “My boyfriend and coach is a migratory theory book. So I followed his advice and played Italian. We were in the right.”
The swiss GM is going to stay in Dresden till Friday to support his girlfriend, afterwards he has to play in the chess league himself. Though Elisabeth succeded, more and more favourites lost their games.

| Anna Muzychuk causes sensation during the tournament – the 14-year-old did not lose today |

Defeat of Stefanova and Kosteniuk
Two other top favourites had to back down and have to make up leeway. Antoaneta Stefanova, Bulgarean European Champion of 2002, was defeated by Lilith Mkrtchian from Armenia and 19-year-old Russian Alexandra Kosteniuk had to back down for Italian player Elina Sedina. Another surprise was Serbian Natasa Bojkovic who could win against Tatiana Kosintseva, a young Russian player who is a secret favourite. 14-year-old Ukrainean Anna Muzychuk caused sensation when she turned a lost position into victory against adeptly Georgian Ketevan Arakhamia-Grant. These two are waylaying as many GM do, among them Pia Cramling from Sweden who could defeat Monika Tsiganowa (Estonia). The only victory of Dresdener players, besides Elisabeth Pähtz, made Evgenija Shmirina who got one full point against Swiss Corinne Rölli. „I risked a chancy continuation and was right, as we had only little time.“, she said. Two raw got Claudia Meißner and Galina Shmirina, who thought that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush and took half a point from better opponents. But Ulrike Rößler, Tina Mietzner and Elena Winkelmann had to back down to their superior opponents. They get another chance to win points today from 1:00 a.m.
